The Medina County Home Fundraiser was a Hit!

Tuesday, September 20, 2005

This past Sunday, September 18, my son, Erin, and I had the pleasure of receiving a warm welcome to a joyous public outing and sumptuous barbecue dinner at the Medina County Home.  And as delicious as the dinner was, that was only the beginning.

There was music and entertainment for various interests and enjoyments.  Sherrill Rundle, a fine female vocalist, gave us rock tunes and jazz.  Also, the Litchfield Community band, under Kenny Bradley's direction, offered a pleasing variety of marches and pops.

There was a small pioneer tent village set up with families in period costume, and Eli Beachy, Civil War re-enactor, strolled the grounds pausing to speak with interested passers-by.  There were wares for sale of every shape and kind.  Also, I had my first experience with a "Chinese" raffle whereby there is a plethora of items of which you must choose to place your chance or chances on.

Last but not least, was an antique car show featuring Model A Fords, the Early Ford V-8's, 1930's to 1960's Fords, Chevrolets and pickup trucks.

I believe, however the most appreciated message given to all who attended was the warm welcome offered us by the residents of the home and the staff.  Businesses and individuals from all over Medina County and surrounding areas contributed to the success of this event.  It served a need as a fund-raiser, but more importantly it offered us the opportunity to willingly accept our responsibility to provide a quality home and health care to older people who can no longer manage alone.  Like it or not, many of us will someday require this same care and service.

Before leaving I asked staff people, Lynn Remington and Chris Sullivan, what message they would most like the general public to know about the home.  The very fine care they offered I had already learned of, but what I was not prepared for is that they find very few people even know about the home.  The second is that most people do not know that all county residents are eligible.  Your financial responsibility is assessed according to your ability or inability to pay.

I appreciate very much the patient courtesy of Lynn and Chris as they answered my questions.  I am also quite confident my fellow Democrats are very supportive of their work and their mission.
