A Celebration of Contemporary Black History

     The Second Baptist Church of Medina and the Medina County Branch of The American Association of University Women will join in “A Celebration of Contemporary Black History ” on Thursday, February 14, at the church, 451 Bronson Street, Medina.  The program will focus on contemporary people and programs that are making the history of today in building the positive future of a diverse society.
      The evening will begin at 7:00 P.M. with  coffee, tea, and punch, and the viewing of history exhibits, followed by the planned program. This is the sixth year that the church and AAUW have joined together in an educational program to observe Black History Month.
       Alison Caplan from the Education Department of the Akron Museum of Art will present a program on award winning contemporary Black illustrators of children’s books.  Cornell Carter, Director of  The West Side Community Center, will give an overview of the development and goals of the Center, which was started under the guidance of  the recently retired pastor of the church, Reverend Russell Burden.
     Serving on the committee planning the event are Rev. Russell and Ozenia Burden,  Medina AAUW Vice President Marilyn Sigel, Cornell Carter, Wilda Howard, Girldine Rucker,  AAUW President Dr. Beth Lawton, and Nancy Sprowls.
      The evening will also include an intermission for the serving of desserts and a social time.   Guests are welcome, and there is no fee to attend. Call 330-625-2772 for information.
