Immigration

Every nation is a sovereign nation with the right to control the flow of immigrants through its borders. America, the essence of being America, however, makes that control a far more particular issue than is faced by any other country. We are a country founded by immigrants and our national attitude leans toward inclusion and away from racially based judgments. Cannon's attitude toward illegal immigration, and his pending legislation, is reckless and foolhardy. A general amnesty would do no more reward people and, ultimately businesses, who have broken and are breaking the law; it will make it easier for terrorists to become “legal citizens”, and it will not control the flow of illegals over the border, instead, it will do no more than hide the problem under the guise of reclassifying the language of the root cause. We must pass legislation that will meet our need to actively control, patrol and secure our country's borders, both North and South. We need to pass legislation that will allocate funds to better supply, better train and better staff our country's Border Patrol without question and without reserve. I must take a law enforcement view on illegal immigration. I have to come down on the side of the law when it comes to prosecution and deportation as it is spelled out by the current legislation. But I am not unsympathetic to the desires of those people who cross the borders to escape starvation and poverty. We need laws that will better assist those people who wish to immigrate here legally. We need to help those people who are willing to take part in the American economy by paying taxes on their wages and the things that they buy. There is no question that immigrant workers are contributing in no small part to our economy, but where do we draw the line in regard to the exploitation of immigrant workers? The DREAM Act was a heady piece of legislation, but, when the system is flawed, even the best of intension's will fizzle out and any resulting efforts cannot succeed. It is time to make significant and sweeping reforms to our immigration laws, procedures and attitudes. We must have true reform and not false solutions that are nothing more than trying to paint a burning building. Cannon would like to pretend that he's doing anything other than sweeping the core of these problems under the rug but nothing could be further from reality.
