Is our Nation Up-to-Date or Out-of-Date?

We all know the dizzying pace that carries us along in this the 21st century.  I keep falling off the side before I’ve even caught up with the 20th century technology whirlwind.  Some of us adjust better than others as a maze of technological tools, gadgets and practices that were new and exciting last year are out of date already.

And as to clothing styles, if you see a man in suit and tie, you know assume he is going to a formal wedding or a funeral, or if you see him in shorts and sandals he must be off to the beach or to church.

So this being our situation, I think most of us are embarrassed to be exposed as out-dated, or – horror of horrors – old fashioned.  But I think we have not yet realized what our republican administrations, both state and national, are doing to rid us of any vestiges of old fashioned, or as they like to label them “quaint” values and practices.

Take the old fashioned practice of not waging war unless we are attacked and a declaration of war is passed by Congress.  Consider also the Geneva Convention, labeled as “quaint” by our US Attorney General.  And how about the “quaint standard” that war be waged only upon reliable, not manipulated, information and that responsibility reach to the top when prisoners are abused.

We need go no further than our own state of Ohio to be taught the up-to-date republican standards of investing taxpayer dollars.  No going to the stodgy old system of investing in tried and true reputable companies with a proven track records when exciting mirages of coin funds beckon.

So I guess it is up to we democrats to choose to be either up-to-date or out-of-date.
