Medina County Assets

January 30, 2006

I believe we all remember when we set out in January 2005 to re-organize and re-vitalize the Medina County Democratic Party under the able leadership of our chairperson, Pam Miller.  And of course, with all the demoralizing defeats of our national and state party of November 2004, we were looking forward to some fresh and strong leadership on those levels.

Due to a recent experience a thought came back to me that had emerged during those winter meetings of 2005.  We can’t promote our party if we do not most of all, have an innate civic pride in promoting our county and the communities within it.

What draws people to live or move to a community or a region in addition to proximity to work?  Is it not the community assets such as schools, cultural and musical events, theatre, hospitals, and sports activities?  And last but not least is the infrastructure, such as streets, adequate water, police and fire protection and the general upkeep of the buildings and parks.

It may be arguable, but I would venture to say, that few of us move to or remain in a community because of the political climate, but rather because of the assets I have just mentioned.

The recent experience I alluded to earlier brought home to me the assets that make Medina County a place where many diverse people of various political beliefs and non-beliefs desire to live.

I recently had major surgery at Cleveland Metropolitan Hospital because my recommended surgeon practices at that hospital only.  Since the surgery required re-hab afterward and Cleveland Metro offered it, my plan was to remain there.

However, after a few days the thought occurred to me that Lodi Hospital offers re-hab service.  The nurse responsible for my transfer to re-hab was incredulous of my decision until I insisted she call them, and to her great surprise there was such a place, and they would accept me.

After that skirmish an ambulance was called, and I was taken to Lodi Community Hospital Rehabilitation Center.  I spent 6 days of excellent nursing and re-hab care, and am now discharged; staying at my son’s apartment.  Lodi has set up a visiting nursing and re-hab service that will come see me 2-3 days per week for 4-5 weeks depending on need and, in my case, covered by Medicare.

If that is not an example of a county asset to take pride in, I know of none better.  And of course, to add to that civic value, we still have Medina General Hospital at our disposal.

In closing, my contention is that if we as a party promote, support and take pride in the assets I have just described, we can openly and effectively speak, practice, and promote the Medina County Democratic values we all believe in.
