Ohio Democratic Party Echoes Calls for Medina County GOP to Cancel Illegal Raffle
Columbus, OH -- Today, the Ohio Democratic Party (ODP) echoed local calls for the Medina County GOP to pull down an illegal raffle they’re using to fundraise for local candidates. In Ohio, only charitable organizations or educational organizations can conduct raffles to raise funds, a prohibition that is also included in the City of Brunswick’s codified ordinances. The illegality of this raffle has been confirmed by the Medina County Prosecutor, yet the local Republican Party has taken no action to pull it down.
The Medina County GOP’s belief that it is somehow above the law and can skirt rules and regulations is consistent with the Ohio GOP’s recent actions, including a $60 million bribery scheme to raise Ohioans’ energy bills, the largest public corruption scandal in state history. While everyday voters are working harder than ever and playing by the rules to try to get ahead, Ohio Republicans feel they can continue skirting the rules and make Ohio voters pay the price.
“The Medina County GOP seems to have taken a page right out of the Ohio Republican Party’s playbook, flouting the rules and then ignoring calls for accountability. For years, we’ve watched Republicans break the rules while voters are left to pay the price. Enough is enough. The Medina County GOP must cancel its raffle and play by the same rules as the rest of us,” said Matt Keyes, spokesperson for the Ohio Democratic Party.
